EUGÉNIA - CLAUDETTE POIRIER

Claudette-280x480BIOGRAPHY

Self-taught. Born in Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois. At the age of 14, I won the first prize in a drawing competition for the construction of a monument to the Braves, which was erected in Parc Sauvé of Beauharnois. For me, it was the revelation of my artistic talent. My career started in 1984 in the wake of Frère Jérôme’s gestural painting workshops. For me, everything was an excuse to tell a story, whether visual or literary. In 1985, 1986 and 1989, I saw dramatic events. These tragic events, a short time apart, shook me. The psychologist advises me that I see to write the emotions that choke me. That's when the adventure began in literature. In 2008, while president of the grouping of artists Arts visuels Roussillon (AVR), I created the “Mille mots en images” [“Thousand words into images”] event that comprises for the duration of an evening, visual artists and poets from the Montérégie as well as performers. AVR remade the event several times. I consider myself first and foremost a painter, but the literature is never far behind. If "A picture is worth a thousand words", the image is not the same for all, as well as words do not have the same resonance in each of us. Everyone’s experience greatly influences perception. This is what I wanted to prove by creating the “Mille mots en images” event.

ARTISTIC PROCESS

I always liked words, the vehicle of my emotions, music of the soul. Born into a family of nine children, and the oldest of the girls, I did not have much time to read when I was a child. I envied so much the vocabulary of my sisters of the convent! The words lead me somewhere else, as well as they make me dream. Impossible for me to listen to a song or a text till the end. I click on a word and here is my imagination taking over. Where is my source of inspiration? Sometimes an artwork, one of mine or from others, sometimes a verse composed by someone else, an exercise that currently suggests the Cercle des Poètes de la Montérégie [Circle of Poets from the Montérégie]. Sometimes randomly pointed words from the dictionary or elsewhere. Sometimes imposed subjects. Sometimes an event lived intensely. The approach does not matter much, but the emotion that emerges from the text is very important to me and is essential. The text must absolutely render the emotion inside of me.

I use the name Eugénia to sign my poems in order to dissociate my painted works from my writings. Why Eugénia? To pay tribute to the two most important women in my life, my mother Eugenie who showed me perseverance and my grandmother Exilda who transmitted me her passion for art and taste in writing.

PUBLIC READINGS:

2009               Amies, sœurs, femmes” [“Friends, sisters, wives”]. Poem read by Céline Mercier during the ceremony held at the Notre-Dame church in Montreal to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragedy that occurred December 6, 1989 at Polytechnique;

2011               I read this poem myself before fifty parliamentary guests at the Salon of the Speaker of the House of Commons in Ottawa, March 8, 2011, where we celebrated Women's Day. On this day, I was invited by Alexandra Mendès MP, to exhibit the Collective “Jamais je n'oublierai le 6 décembre 1989” ["I will never forget December 6, 1989”], a 5' x 8' mural painting, a project I conducted in 2000 with the collaboration of the personnel and students of Polytechnique.
